The DA-PCC plays a pivotal role in the genetic improvement of carabaos nationwide. By meticulously maintaining pedigree records, researchers can track ancestry and improve the genetic line, ensuring the sustainability and productivity of future generations. Moreover, since 2004, DA-PCC has facilitated over 1,125,936 artificial insemination (AI) services, leading to the birth of 233,384 calves, marking a significant advancement in the industry’s potential.
Furthermore, the DA-PCC operates Semen Processing Laboratories in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija (managed by PCC at CLSU), Los BaƱos, Laguna (managed by PCC at UPLB), and Bukidnon (managed by PCC at CMU) producing, evaluating, and processing frozen semen from genetically superior sires for upgrading native carabaos via artificial insemination. Since 2010, over 3,744,492 frozen semen straws have been produced, with 3,008,561 distributed nationwide through a systematized semen distribution method linked with AI technicians, cooperatives, DA-RFUs and LGUs.
In areas where AI services are limited and not readily available, DA-PCC has its bull entrustment program where purebred dairy-type bulls are loaned out to qualified farmers for natural mating with purebred dairy-type buffaloes, crossbreds and native carabaos. Since 2004, the DA-PCC has recorded 82,970 bull loan services nationwide, with 49,469 calves produced.
